Finding Your Purpose in Blogging

I might be crazy but how does 30 days of blogging tips and mom hacks sound? I have a ton of awesome content about how to become a blogger while also being a stay at home mom or working mother. It’s not easy but it’s totally possible. And it’s time for Day 2, where I talk about finding your purpose!

It's time to grab your pen and paper or open your favorite note-taking app and let's get to work. I want to talk to you today about why it's so important to know the purpose of your blog.

If you have researched building a blogging business before you might have heard something similar regarding marketing topics and knowing your audience. But, that's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about living with purpose and bringing that fire into your blogging business.

What is your purpose and why is it so important?

Why do you want to start, run, and build a blogging business? There are so many important reasons why you should write your purpose down. And you should keep it somewhere where you'll see it on a regular basis!

Your special reason isn't something that I can tell you or you can find in a simple Google search. You might need to spend time digging deep or you may instantly know what your "why" is.

You may be thinking something like, "This seems pretty simple. How does this fit with blogging tips or mom hacks?"

As you create and build your blogging business you will have months of unpaid work. Trust me, it stinks to put in tons of time and not see a financial return. But we all have to start from somewhere.

If you stick with it, you will build up and reach that point where you start seeing the return that you are looking for. However, it doesn't happen overnight. Honestly, it usually doesn't even happen over the period of a few months. It's a longer investment, sometimes it takes months and months to get to that point where you start making money.

You need a strong solid purpose for why you are doing what you are doing. You need to know the reason why you are spending all that time and doing all that work to build your blogging business. During those months when money isn't coming in this will be what helps you to keep going. This is what helps you not to lose heart and give up.

Can money be your purpose?

I'm not even going to pretend that money has nothing to do with it because it does. Money doesn't need to be part of blogging, but if you are building a blogging "business" then the money definitely matters. We all have bills to pay and lives to live. The mortgage company isn't going to accept the 100 likes you got when you shared your blog posts as payment. They want money.

Most blogging moms that I know want to or need to contribute to their family finances. If money is part of your "why”, that's perfectly fine. It was a part of my "why" as well. But, it can't be the main thing that is motivating you. It can't be the only reason you are trying to grow a blogging business.

Money can buy a version of happiness, but it doesn't buy our entire true fulfilling happiness.

Finding meaning and having a purpose is what gets that true happiness for us. It's having a fulfilling life, loving our babies, watching them grow into successful adults, and investing in others that brings real true happiness. It's not money, even though money is something we need in life. It just can't be the core purpose that brings us happiness.

Finding your purpose…

Ok, so if money can't be your entire purpose, what should it be? Unfortunately, I can't tell you that. And, it's not something that's just going to appear out of thin air.

Each of us has a purpose that is unique to us. It's based on your skills, gifts, talents, interests, experiences, and passions. You must dig deep to discover what it is. Here are some things to get you thinking:

  • Do you want to bring value to people?

  • Are you super passionate about a certain subject? Do you love researching and writing about it every chance you get?

  • Is there something you know that you want to share with the world?

  • Do you have a skill you want to teach other people?

When you find your “why”, it will give you the motivation that you need to keep going during those tough days when there is no money to keep you motivated. And, honestly even when the money is rolling in, you are going to need to know the purpose behind what you are doing or else you will lose that sense of fulfillment.

Want to know my purpose?

Let me share how this looks in my own blogging business. Part of my background is in business. I love business. Honestly, I'm probably not a very interesting person!

I love talking about business strategies, funnels, email marketing, and whatever tactics businesses are trying. I feel like you are probably falling asleep as you read this, but it brings me a lot of joy. It's a part of who I am, and I have a lot of passion for the subject.

I also love helping people, especially moms, and I really thrive in a job that lets me do that. When I combine this with my love of business, I find my purpose. These two things together are what helps me to get up on those rough days and keep working to build my blogging business. Even if the day is crazy and things just aren't going well.

Running a business is difficult. And running a business from home with kiddos feels like a circus at times. But, it’s totally worth it. Having your “why” is going to help you keep going on those really difficult days to get up and do it all again the next day. You need your purpose!
